Paling
From Cursix Tales
Paling Orb
The Paling Orb is a magical device created by six powerful Royal Mage's over three thousand five hundred years ago, the orbs were created as a means of protecting important population centers that lack the power plants used to power a massive shield generator. Coincidently, the Orbs turned out to be five times more powerful than a typical shield generator of the time.
A single orb can protect an area that's ten miles in diameter, with each added orb the distance increase's by ten, but so does the strength of the field. However, its area of protection is determined by the mages who operate them, meaning six orbs that would protect a sixty mile wide area, could be reconfigured to protect a mere ten mile area, but this came as a cost as each orb tends to lose 10-20% of it's maximum strength
After year's of usage, it became possible for the orbs to be created by low level mages, while not as strong as the originals, they still served a useful purpose. When the Phoenix escaped the original homeworld, they took with them twelve orbs created by the Royal Council's mages... when the capital of Shogunin was created, eight of these orbs were placed in strategic locations through the city, while the last four placed in the Royal Castle.
Smaller orbs are used to protect convoys on seas and others more to protect outposts, in a strange relationship, when Neotrium was added to the construction of the orbs, it became almost impossible to break the paling with conventional weapons.
To recognize Paling, one has only to look for a shimmering blue electrical field. The field is naturally transparent and can protect the area from weapons and other solid objects, including energy based weapons... however the Paling has no effect on organic material. Meaning soldiers can pass harmlessly through the barrier with weapons in hand.
- The word 'Paling' was adopted from FF12, in order to not fringe on any potential copy-right laws I have taken the liberty to change it a bit to make more sense with this story (at least, sense in my own way)
