The Nekolian Ancient Gate Network was one of their favored methods of FTL(Faster Than Light) travel for the Nekolians and their allies, but not their only means.

The Gate Network itself is not a fixed network, but is comprised of the collection of gates in their current locations. In addition, there were, at one time, several different types of gate in the network.

The gates fall into three major categories, based on the intended range and function of the gate.

Regional Gates

The Regional Gate Network was a land-based gate network used to move people and objects around a planet or star system, usually built into fairly public places. Fully inter operable with Intergalactic Gates within the Region, whether they be permanent or just passing through, the gates were primarily used by the civilian population of a given system to get around.

These gates were built to the same size scale as the Intergalactic Gates, but require much less power and use a highly resilient localized system to function.

Intergalactic Gates

These gates are nearly identical to the Regional Gates, but have a wormhole generator integrated as well. This allows them to not only function as part of a regional gate network, but as a bridge to other star systems.

The field generated by the wormhole generator can be used for two different purposes. It can be used to link two capable gates with a wormhole, or it can be used to create a hyperspace bubble around a ship to facilitate operation of the Nekolian Hyperdrive. For this reason, most Nekolian ships have a fully functional Intergalactic Gate on board. Due to the nature of wormhole physics, however, a given system's primary gate controller overrides all other gates in the system for incoming wormholes. Combined with the Nekolian FTL communications ability, this allows a single system to maintain a set of backup Intergalactic Gates without having to worry about collisions.

As a bonus, Nekolian Ships in a Nekolian System rarely have to land. Since the Intergalactic Gate network is fully inter operable with the Regional Gate Network, when you are in the region, those moving between ship and shore can use the gate network to do so.

Both ends of an attempted connection with Intergalactic Gates must be able to generate the field generated by the wormhole generator, although the calling side can provide the power required to do so to the receiving side. Should the wormhole generator be disabled in some way, the gate becomes a non-entity in the network for travel, but may still recieve updates to the locations of other gates.

Orbital Gates

The Orbital Gate Network was created as a compliment to the terrestrial Intergalactic gates to facilitate quick movement of ships from one star system to another, faster then the Nekolian Hyperdrive was capable of going. Exclusively designed for intergalactic travel, this network was used for larger trade and military actions, but not much for civilian travel.

The Orbital Gate Network operates on an ever so slightly different principal then the Intergalactic Gate Network, rendering the two networks inoperable with each other. This works out for the best, however, as it means that a single system can have both gate networks available. Due to wormhole physics, though, only ONE of the two systems can be active at any one time.
